To help guide your ideas, here are a few prompts – but don’t worry if you’re not sure yet. Part of the process is working together to find the right direction.

  1. Are there specific works of Christian’s you love?
    Perhaps a painting has already sold or isn’t quite the right size for your space – a commission can bring a similar energy into your home, tailored just for you.
  2. Is there a moment, memory, or theme you’d like to capture?
    Many commissions are created to commemorate a holiday, wedding, family memory, or a place that holds emotional significance.
  3. Do Christian’s recurring themes resonate with you?
    His work explores landscapes, surfing, nudity, growing up, pop art, and science fiction. He loves to use humour to express his ideas in his work. These themes can be incorporated or adapted to suit your story.
  4. What style are you drawn to? Which style speaks to you — and why?
    Christian’s stand out stylistic approaches include:

Piha Wedding Commission

We decided to have a painting done to remember our wedding which was held near Piha. We looked at artwork that had been done of the Piha area and came across a painting by Christian Nicolson which we really liked. We asked Christian to paint a picture in a similar style with us in the picture to remember our wedding. Christian came up with several great ideas for the final artwork. Christian was easy and fun to work with, communication was excellent and he took the time to sort out exactly what the image in our heads was that we wanted painted. The end result was fantastic, and the process of having the painting done was  a very enjoyable experience.
