DIRECT FROM SCULPTURE ON THE GULF 2009

A FULL SIZE SCULPTURE OF THE LITTLE BALSA WOOD PLANES WE USED TO PLAY WITH WHEN WE WERE KIDS

This is yet another extension of my childhood theme I have worked on for the past 2 years. Finally I am beginning to relive some of my fantasies and transfer them into much grander scales. When I was young I used to play with small balsa wood planes that were replicas of the ww2 fighter planes. My favourite was always the spitfire but they were all good and with the right amount of plastercine on the nose to get the balance perfect they would do a loop or glide effortlessly along.

This is a full size spitfire. Wing span 11m (36 feet) body 10.4m long. Steel frame, polystyrene interior, clad in 6mm Fijian Kauri treated marine ply. It comes in 5 sections which bolt together. Weight approx 1.3 tonne. Nose: sheet lead.

The building of this was incredibly hard. It took hundreds of hours to complete and over 6 months research to get it ready to begin. Technically it was always going to be a challenge because scaled up to full size the thickness was still only 100mm and this meant we needed to be clever to make sure it stayed straight and strong. Finally all those days spent fantasing being in the cockpit of a spitfire seemed to become all the more real. It is made to last and almost cost everything I had to make.

Note: Shipping it internationally is no problem as it breaks down into 5 flat pieces.
